Gum Disease (Periodontology)

PERIODONTOLOGY (gum disease) is the area of dental medicine dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the periodontal tissues, which are the tissues that support of the teeth: gums, bone and the periodontal ligament, responsible for the connection between the teeth and jaws.

Periodontal diseases are caused by the deposit of plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) in the oral cavity, which can lead to acute or chronic inflammation of the periodontal tissues.

We can divide periodontal diseases into two major types, gingivitis, which  an inflammation of the gums and is very common, especially in teenagers. When gingivitis is not properly treated, it can progress to a more serious type of periodontal disease, which is periodontitis and which affects not only the gums but also the supporting bone of the tooth, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss due lack of bone support.

Currently, these diseases represent a large percentage of the causes of tooth loss in adults, and early detection of the symptoms can be crucial in their prevention. Symptoms may include: red and swollen gums, spontaneous bleeding or bleeding when brushing the teeth, bad breath or woobling teeth.
